Grey Room

Contact & Submissions

Grey Room is a peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary scholarly journal, with a particular focus on art, architecture, media, and politics. Essays published in Grey Room frequently contain elements of critical and historical analysis that speak across two or more of the aforementioned specialties. Grey Room has published widely on visual and materially oriented topics in fields including anthropology, science studies, religious studies, and legal studies, particularly when they challenge disciplinary frames, thematics, methods, and objects.

Submissions to Grey Room must be sent in PDF or Word format to editors@greyroom.org. Manuscripts for review may be no more than 8,500 words (excluding notes), double-spaced, and in accordance with The Chicago Manual of Style. Please include a title page containing the title, word count, your name, and contact information.

Successful submissions undergo extensive peer review by multiple readers and, typically, multiple rounds of edits. Due to the volume of submissions and editorial standards, Grey Room is only able to publish a small percentage of the manuscripts it receives. Authors can expect acknowledgement of submission and an initial decision within 8–12 weeks; in exceptional cases where this is not possible we will reach out to the author to provide an update on the process.

Special issue proposals should include a 1–2 page prospectus outlining the topic, followed by brief abstracts of the proposed contributions. If the editors determine that the topic is a promising fit for Grey Room, the proposing author(s) will be invited to submit all the manuscripts together, edited and formatted according to the journal’s submission guidelines. Each contribution will undergo an individual and rigorous review, evaluated both for its intrinsic merits and in relation to the issue as a whole. We cannot guarantee that all proposed contributions will be uniformly accepted.
